What Is an Armored Variable Area Flow Meter?

A metal tube rotameter has a tapered metal tube and a magnetic float. The float moves upward as flow increases. A magnetic follower tracks the float position and moves the pointer on a local indicator. The entire measuring unit sits inside a solid metal body, usually stainless steel. This design removes the glass tube found in low-pressure rotameters. Because there is no glass, the meter survives pressure spikes, vibration, and rough handling on offshore platforms.


We sell these meters to oil and gas operators in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. A customer in Vietnam ordered 14 units for a high-pressure nitrogen purge skid. The line pressure was 85 bar and the fluid was dry nitrogen at 40 Celsius. He needed local indication only and no power supply. That job used DN25 flanged meters with 4-20 mA HART output as a backup signal to the PLC.


High-Pressure Ratings and Line Sizes

Most metal tube rotameters cover DN15 to DN150. High-pressure versions for DN15 to DN50 often carry ratings of 400 bar to 700 bar at 100 Celsius. Larger sizes from DN65 to DN150 usually drop to 40 bar or 64 bar. Always check the pressure-temperature curve for your process fluid. A meter rated for 400 bar at 20 Celsius may only handle 250 bar at 200 Celsius.


Here is the thing. Many engineers only specify pressure and skip temperature. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A water injection skid in Nigeria had a 63 bar pump discharge at 80 Celsius. The purchase order only listed 63 bar. The standard DN40 meter was fine for pressure but the local indicator housing needed a high-temperature seal. A quick call before order avoided a two-week delay.


Corrosive Media and Wetted Materials

For corrosive fluids, wetted parts matter more than the housing. Standard bodies use 316L stainless steel. For acids, chlorides, or seawater, you may need PTFE lining, Hastelloy C276, or titanium. We usually quote PTFE-lined metal tube rotameters for hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite in water treatment plants. In desalination plants across the Middle East and northern Africa, operators use these meters on brine and seawater lines.


A paint manufacturer in Thailand measured solvent flow with a standard stainless steel meter. The solvent attacked the O-rings. These meters do not require external power for local indication. Many users add a 4-20 mA HART transmitter for remote flow reading. You can also add one or two alarm switches for high flow or low flow trips. For hazardous areas, specify ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2 certification. FM and CSA options are available for projects in Latin America.


In practice, most chemical batching skids use one alarm switch to stop a pump at low flow. Gas distribution panels use the 4-20 mA signal to send flow data to a DCS or SCADA system. The local indicator stays as a visual check for operators walking the line.
